About Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri — the "Valley of Milk" — earns its poetic name from the milky-white streams that flow through its meadows. Located at 2,730 metres in the Budgam district, about 42 kilometres from Srinagar, this pristine highland meadow is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and least commercialised destinations in all of Kashmir. Legend has it that the 11th-century Sufi saint Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani struck the ground with his staff, and milk-white water sprang forth, giving the valley its name.

What sets Doodhpathri apart from Kashmir's more famous destinations is its raw, unfiltered natural beauty. There are no cable cars, no bustling markets, and no rows of hotels. Instead, the landscape unfolds as an endless carpet of green, punctuated by clusters of pine trees and bordered by snow-dusted peaks. The streams that criss-cross the meadows acquire their distinctive milky hue as glacial water rushes over smooth limestone beds, creating a visual effect that is both otherworldly and deeply calming.

The meadows of Doodhpathri are traditionally used as summer pastures by the Gujjar and Bakerwal communities — semi-nomadic pastoral groups who bring their livestock to graze here during the warmer months. Their distinctive log huts, smoke curling from the chimneys, and grazing horses add a timeless pastoral quality to the landscape. Spending time here feels like stepping into a Kashmir that existed long before tourism arrived.

Doodhpathri is ideally suited for nature walks, photography, and quiet contemplation. The absence of heavy tourist infrastructure means the air is cleaner, the silence is deeper, and the experience is more authentic. It makes for a superb half-day or full-day trip from Srinagar, and pairs beautifully with a visit to nearby Yusmarg for travellers seeking Kashmir's offbeat side.

Best Time to Visit

May to September is the recommended window for visiting Doodhpathri. May–June is when the meadows come alive with wildflowers and the streams are at their most photogenic, with temperatures between 10–22°C. July–August is peak monsoon, which can make roads slippery but the greenery is at its most lush. September offers crisp autumn air and golden light. The road to Doodhpathri is typically inaccessible from October through April due to heavy snowfall, and facilities in the meadow are minimal even during season.

How to Reach

The nearest airport is Srinagar (Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport, SXR), roughly 42 km away. The drive from Srinagar takes approximately 2 hours via the Budgam–Khan Sahib road. The final stretch of road winds uphill through dense forest, and while it is motorable, an SUV or higher-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially after rain. There is no regular public bus service to Doodhpathri, so hiring a private taxi from Srinagar is the most practical option. Some travellers combine the trip with a visit to Yusmarg, which lies about 20 km away.
